MyinTuition expands to UMass

May 20, 2019 By MyIntuition

Single UMass website provides MyinTuition estimates for all 4 campuses

University of MassachusettsToday, all four undergraduate campuses of the University of Massachusetts system are taking an essential step towards clarifying college costs by implementing MyinTuition. UMass is now the first public university system to implement MyinTuition, which is available on one centralized website. UMass Amherst, UMass Boston, UMass Dartmouth, and UMass Lowell now join 50 other partner schools across the country who use MyinTuition to quickly and easily deliver information about college costs to prospective students.

“MyinTuition is a simple, effective tool for providing cost transparency to prospective students,” said UMass Vice President for Communications Jeff Cournoyer. “It lowers that hurdle for students and their families, for whom affordability is a primary concern. By developing a custom integration of MyinTuition with Massachusetts.edu, we’re also streamlining the process of researching their options within the UMass system. Our goal is to help students and their families make informed decisions. MyinTuition is helping us achieve that.”

MyinTuition is a revolutionary online tool that provides accurate college cost estimates. Users are asked to provide six basic and readily known financial characteristics and are not required to access any tax forms. Created in 2013 by Phillip Levine, Katharine Coman and A. Barton Hepburn Professor of Economics at Wellesley College and now founder and CEO of MyinTuition Corp, MyinTuition allowed over 400,000 people to generate college estimates over the past year alone.

“I’m thrilled that so many people have had access to better college pricing information so that they can make more informed educational decisions,” Levine says. “I’m optimistic that even more people will be helped as we expand to more schools, including today’s addition of all four UMass campuses.”

While MyinTuition helps clarify college costs for all prospective students, it is especially critical in providing guidance to students from lower-income families. MyinTuition provides an accurate estimate of college cost after factoring in financial aid, separately reporting scholarships along with loan and work study expectations. For low-income students who do not think a college education is viable financially, the estimate provided by MyinTuition often reveals that college is actually achievable. The system-wide adoption of MyinTuition by UMass schools will allow thousands more students each year to have a better understanding of what college will actually cost, allowing students to better plan for the future.

About MyinTuition

MyinTuition is a groundbreaking tool that easily provides a personalized estimate of what it would cost an individual to attend college. Users provide answers to a few basic financial questions (including total family income, cash in the bank, and savings held in retirement accounts and other investment accounts). They receive individualized estimates of the cost of college, including out-of-pocket costs, available loans and work-study opportunities, and scholarship assistance. Highly qualified students would also receive estimates of merit aid if the school regularly offers it. The tool is easy to use and more straightforward than the typical net price calculator.

MyinTuition Corp. was founded in July 2017; it was initially created in 2013 and developed with the assistance of Wellesley College. Its mission is to lift the veil of uncertainty regarding college costs and, for qualified students, dispel the notion that college will cost them an exorbitant amount of money.

In 2018, Founder and CEO of MyinTuition was recently featured in Boston Globe Magazine as one of Boston’s “19 fresh faces and bold new ideas from Boston”, for his work with MyinTuition and clarifying the cost of college.

“A simplifed financial-aid calculator—much easier to use than the federally mandated calculators that most colleges create—has begun spreading beyond Wellesley College ...[raising] the possibility that information on actual college costs will become more widely available.”
— David Leonhardt, New York Times

“We want students to apply because they think it is the best fit for them. We don’t want a misperception about cost to be a barrier. MyinTuition helps prospective students and their families quickly get past those misconceptions.”
— William Dudley, President, Washington and Lee University

"I used the MyinTuition tool at multiple points in the college search and application process. I was relieved to find the numbers manageable from the start. The most important time I used it, however, was the night after I got my acceptance letter and before I received my financial aid letter. It reduced my stress greatly to see the numbers, and when I got my award letter the next morning, my actual numbers were very similar... And affordable."
— Ciara Cheli-Colando (Wellesley College, Class of 2020)
